What is it about?

(Blurb from GoodReads)

My name is Tamsin Vale and my life is about to get real… Really complicated and ridiculously dangerous. Which is almost funny given at nineteen I already know too much of the darkness of the world and people, the secrets they keep.

Or so I thought.

Turns out those quirky abilities I’ve been keeping secret expose me to a world I didn’t know existed. Sure, I knew I wasn’t human—but how exactly do I find out more without ending up in the wrong hands?

And I’m not so sure I’m in the right hands now given some of the reactions to finding me. They say I’m the last fairy. I’m not sure I should trust them when their thoughts are mostly of power and how to use me.

But I’m also not sure I have much of a choice. My powers are dangerous and I don’t know how to use them. They promise to teach me what I need to know and give me a chance at something I’ve never had before.

A normal life. I don’t think anything about Artemis University and those who attend is normal, but it’s still better than the life I’ve been living if they keep half their promises.

I think hoping they’ll keep half is generous.

Note from the Publisher

Artemis University is a hot burning reverse harem, university-age paranormal academy series with darker elements, strong language, violence, and a heroine who follows her own moral compass of what is right… And who she ends up giving her heart to.

Thoughts on Upended Life

So many thoughts

I’m so mixed on this book! On one hand, I loved it, on the other hand, I couldn’t relate to it. Our FMC is beyond tough, even as the author tries to infuse some softness in her domineering guise. This lady really takes no crap, from ANYONE! Even to those who really don’t deserve her vitriol. It’s an interesting dynamic. There were some parts I literally went, “Yay girl!”, while others caused, “woah girl.” She’s snarky, witty and over powered. But I still kinda loved her. I’m intrigued to see where this will go.

Pros:

  • FMC is strong, both mentally and physically. And she won’t apologize for it or try to soften to make others more comfortable.
  • Quite a bit of insight to the drawn out speeches.
  • I am enjoying the side characters.
  • Metaplot is curious.

Cons:

  • FMC is an asshole- and not in the way some see strong women, but the kind that you’d label any guy with that attitude as an asshole.
  • Some conclusions are drawn without explanation or lead up, just sudden inclusion to the conversations that made me read it twice, wondering if I missed something.
  • Minor editing errors.

Perspective:

First Person, Single POV

Ending Type:

Episodic

Rating:

R = Adult.

Romantic Dynamic:

Unsure of the final outcome, but will be Reverse Harem.

Character Age Range:

19+

My Final Verdict on Upended Life

There is a lot to love here, and a lot to question. Intriguing, fairly unique and snarky as all hell, this is an ‘in your face’ Academy RH you have to read to understand. Free on KU.
