What is it about?
Norah is a Voodoo Practitioner in New Orleans… well, actually, she is a Voodoo Practitioner who doesn’t really practice Voodoo. She runs a Voodoo shop for the tourists, plying fake spells and sleight of hand to the unwary – because that’s what the tourists really want, and it pays the bills. That all changes when she starts suffering from a ‘pull’ – PMS style cramps that are dragging her, kicking and screaming, northward.
Landing in Salem, Massachusetts, Norah discovers the source of her magical angst is none other than four incredibly sexy, male witches… who just happen to be missing the fifth point of their Pentagram inspired coven. A fifth that appears to be her. Except… their covens have never had female members before.. and that ‘pull’ is affecting ALL of them in very, very physical ways.
Confused, befuddled and more than a bit turned on, the reluctant quintet must navigate their murky mixings while trying to discover the source of the danger that suddenly surrounds them all.
Thoughts
I liked this book, but didn’t quite LOVE it – yet I have feeling the rest of the series will get better. I felt this novel was bogged down simply because the world needed to be built, relationships explained and those all too important first meetings needed to happen.
Norah comes across as an incredibly strong character, even if she is floundering in a situation she doesn’t quite understand. She doesn’t want to be part of the coven, she merely wanted to know why her magic, and her instincts, were pulling her North. When she finds the guys, the attraction is of the insta-lust variety, steaming quickly to a boil that spills over and burns them all. The idea that she is meant to be there takes a backseat to that attraction, at least for a little while.
There are also some confusing aspects to this world, situations that were not fully explained and roles that have yet to be defined. Since this is the first in a five book series, that makes sense and is easily excused, yet some holes should have been filled in even in this first offering. Magically inspired connections and attraction is used frequently as a plot point in Reverse Harem novels, yet when Norah suffers from a magical build up and needs the sexual release only her guys can offer… well, that seemed to be just thrown in there with little scaffolding or true meaning. Maybe that will be explained in Book 2? Perhaps that is why there has never been a female coven member? Are they too strong?
Questions… questions.
Perspective
Written in First Person with Multiple POV’s
Ending Style
HEFN (Happy Ending For Now) with Hook
Pros:
- MC, total badass Voodoo Practitioner who knows who she wants, if not what… what’s not to love?
- Travis. He’s not down with her being the Fifth, and though his reasons are vaguely explained, I fear they will become paramount later. I kinda love the jerk.
- Enforcers… not totally unique, but a good base for an UF RH.
Cons:
- Some action was confusing.
- Super fast burn. Reasons, yeah, but too quick to flame.
- Various magics… this needs to be explained better. Who can do what? Why? Where does she fit in?
Verdict
I wouldn’t put it at the TOP of your TBR queue, but it should still earn a spot. The overall mystery behind the covens, and the danger surrounding them, kept me reading, even if some of the details made me roll my eyes. I am hoping those issues will be smoothed as the series progresses.
