Down and Dirty

Sadie Moss has a talent for making her novels get BETTER as the series moves along. This is no exception. Put it on your TBR list.

What is it about?

As the events and recent revelations slowly settle around them, Willow and her guys must travel to the magically protected Vampire castle, Penumbra, at King Carrick’s behest. Tradition demands that the King must approve any new fledgling before the turning, yet for Willow, that didn’t… couldn’t… happen. Now, neck deep in politics and intrigue, Willow and her guys must navigate a fragile peace with a man determined to make them suffer – all while investigating the growing Shade problem and somehow, someway, hiding Willow’s most dangerous secret of all… she is Fae.

Thoughts

This book picked up quickly from book 1, gaining the traction the 1st one missed. It evolves into a far more complex story and we see true character definition between the guys. Instead of the slightly opaque versions we were first introduced to, we gain insight into the individuals and glimpse a broader picture of who they really are, including motivations, histories and the drives each of them face while dancing to the tune of Vampire politics.

Willow, as in Book 1, is fabulous. Her powers are growing by literal leaps and bounds, and with the revelations of her ancestry stewing through the pages, her other abilities come into stark focus. The reluctant (and not so reluctant) quartet is strung tight, balancing on the wire between what they need to do, and what they want to do. One wrong move could send them all plummeting and destroy everything they are trying to build.

Perspective

First Person, Multiple POV

Pros:

  • Finds its footing with both plot and substance, becoming a very appealing PNR RH.
  • Unique take on both vampire and fae lore
  • Willow. Enough said.
  • Well edited
  • Malcom: He earned a spot on my ‘con’ list in my review of Book 1, yet here he finds his place on the more favorable list. He’s growing on me.

Cons:

  • King Carrick. He’s a D-bag
  • Have to wait till Jan 17th for book 3
  • Obvious clues gave away what the shades were back in book 1. I got annoyed the Quartet didn’t see it sooner…. even though they DO explain their lack of awareness reasonably.

Verdict

4 out of 5 Stars

Overall, this is a delightful series that is only getting stronger as it grows. The characters are engaging and relatable – even if they are vampires. With the 3rd installment set to drop on January 17th, you should put this book in your queue today.

Please note that this is a Reverse Harem novel with intense sexual themes more suited to an older audience. 18+
