Reflections of You by Yumoyori Wilson
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
Slow/medium-burn RH, Paranormal, NA
Available on Kindle and Kindle Unlimited
Like many of Wilson’s other works, this book is a creative whirlwind that sucks you in and throws you into a new world with completely different rules. Mages are real, magic is known throughout the land and Mana rules it all.
Jewel Starfire is a triple threat when it comes to magic; she can hold a lot of mana, recover it quickly and even has a high casting caliber. It makes her literally a magical prodigy, and the perfect candidate to become a Mage Warrior when she is older, except she has no interest in ever actually using her talents. When her brother died at the all-male magic Academy, something broke inside her.. and in her mother. Now, fast forward 15 years and Jewel is sticking to her convictions – no magic. Yet all that changes when her ailing and often confused mother switches up the script and enrolls Jewel in the same All-Male Academy her brother died at… as Jinn Starfire, a man. Determined to keep the smile on her mother’s face, Jewel uses her impressive magic to change herself into a male and joins the elite… what is the worst that could happen?
Thoughts
I always enjoy the plots of this author’s books – she is so inventive! I do, however, find myself bogged down by the over complicated dialogue she SOMETIMES employs – dialogue used to explain situations, etc. it just doesn’t feel natural to the characters, especially since they do not alway talk like that in other interactions.
Perspective:
Written in First Person POV
Pros:
- Jewel/Jinn – she/he is a spitfire, no matter what guise is worn. Yet there are differences between the male and female version, which makes this an interesting study in genders.
- Logan – He is the sweetest character, even when he is jealous!
- Fast Paced.
- The Evolving Harem. Many harem’s lose character definition, but Wilson allows each man to come alive and reveals more about them.
Cons:
- Long winded dialogue at times.
- Some editing issues, minor and doesn’t really detract.
- Zane – read the book, you’ll get the complaint.
Verdict

I rated this a 3.5 instead of a 4 because it dragged in places, as if the plot became stuck between the characters and action. It was a bit confusing at times, and the overarching ‘villain’ of the book – and the almost hero who tried to help – made little sense. Conversely, there were also moments of laugh out loud humor and enough gender exploration to make you think. What does a girl do with a penis when she is suddenly a man? I mean, have YOU tried peeing standing up with one of those things??
All in all, this novel was sweet and rather charming, eliciting soft smiles and quite a few grins as I went along. Worth a read.
