Down and Dirty

Interesting new RH, worth checking out. Free on KU.

What is it about?

(Blurb from GoodReads)

New town, new school. Same story. I’m Laura, I’ve spent most of my life crisscrossing the county yielding to the whims of my transient mother. We’ve never stayed in one place long enough to call it home, and I don’t have any hope of that changing.

I follow the rules; no drawing attention to myself, no friends, and especially no boys.

But my mom’s been keeping secrets, secrets so profound they threaten to turn my world upside down. I’ve always assumed her paranoia was a symptom of a mental illness, but as her secrets begin to unravel, I realize nothing is what it seems.

As my life careens out of control a group of guys from school promise to give me answers about who I really am. I’m afraid of what I might learn, but more afraid of what I could be giving up if I don’t listen.

Thoughts

Coming of age in a secret paranormal world

This is fun, if a bit painful at times. Laura is brutally innocent and naive when it comes to the guys, making assumptions based on her own life experiences (which is normal, we ALL do that) instead of just asking. Honestly, I can’t blame her – but it is setting up some revelations for her in book 2, ones that are going to rock her world, probably literally.

Perspective

First Person, Single POV

Ending Type

???  Uh… I am not really sure? It just cuts off. Not even a HFN, just… done. Episodic, I suppose, but… wow.

Steam Level

Slow Burn of the YA variety – heat is building, but this is a slow go.

Pros:

  • Intriguing Plot.
  • New take on the PNR theme.
  • Delightful slowburn.
  • Characters are interesting and unique.

Cons:

  • Some editing issues.
  • That ending… I mean, what?? It just cuts off.

Verdict

4 out of 5 Stars

Fun YA RH, I recommend picking it up on KU.
