Great intro to a series – you should pick this up!
What is it about?
Artemis, daughter of Zeus and Lota, has spent her entire life in sheltered seclusion with a small tribe of like-minded women. They hunt, gather, play and live alone, far away from the prying eyes of men or the manipulations of the God’s politics. The day of the Solar Eclipse, Artemis knew her life was changing. The shadow in the sky brought a chill to her heart and the surety that something was wrong.
Soon, a messenger arrives with hateful news. Apollo, her twin brother, has died. Unlike Artemis, Apollo has spent his days immersed in the highs and lows of Godly society, attending the well known Academy where he learned the rules and powers that came with his station. This year, the Academy is hosting a set of dangerous Trials, with the winner taking the council seat of the retiring Zeus. Trials meant to test the courage and strength of the Gods. Trials filled with danger and deceit. Trials where her brother was murdered.
And now they want her to take his place.
Thoughts
Wonderful!
I started this book a week ago, read one page and it down – my mistake. I had just finished book 4 in the All the Pretty Monsters series and my headspace just wasn’t ready for Gods. I waited a week to try again and then I DEVOURED this book! Its fresh, original and it takes some of the most well loved pantheons and twists them to suit a new narrative. There are still echoes of familiar myth imbuing the pages, but this story is truly all about Artemis and the Academy of the Gods.
Perspective
First Person, Multiple POV
Ending Type
Episodic, cliffhanger
Pros:
- Artemis: Badass extraordinaire.
- Underlying politics.
- Zeus is a good guy??!
- Each god or goddess still play the roles they are known for, but things are shifted just a little bit to the left…
Cons:
- Like Artemis, you don’t quite know who to trust just yet.
- Book 2 isn’t ready yet…. and that is a bit disappointing. This was published last year.
Verdict

I really enjoyed this Goddess centered book. It’s fresh and unique, showcasing familiar faces within a new story. I recommend it with no reservations.
