Down and Dirty

Interesting take on a Shifter RH, worth looking at on KU.

What is it about?

(Blurb from GoodReads)

Ariana has been stuck inside a cage as long as she can remember.
From one master to the next, she hasn’t known kindness since her parents were alive, and even then, she never belonged to herself. When a handsome werewolf saves her from the fighting pits, Ariana’s life is turned upside down.

Thrown into a brand new world, Ariana discovers she’s not only a wolf, but the Silver Shifter, a being born every hundred years, and she’s supposed to be the last. But her hot new alpha is hiding more than he’s telling, including the alphas of the other New York packs.

Wolves. Dragons. Bears. Panthers. Each pack is holding back a secret from her, like why Ariana feels an unnatural pull to each.

Thoughts

Good, but fast

I really like the concept behind this book and the overall plot. It’s unique and plays with the concept of fated mates rather well, including adding jealousy where many RH novels make a deliberate attempt to leave that out.

All that said, I did have some issues. She was raised in a cage and made to fight to the death under the heavy hand of a warlock, again and again. It’s horrific and heart wrenching. When we get our first glimpse of her situation and the Alpha that comes to shut the pits down, and inadvertently finds her, we FEEL it. From his POV, we see what he thinks of her, the sympathy and the fear. From her’s, we get the bloodlust and the pain. It’s palpable and brutal – and sets the stage for a rather epic romance.

Yet… and it’s a big YET… that alpha, who seemed so caring and strong, turns into the BIGGEST FUCKING JERK! He seems to lose any and all sense of understanding and then locks her in ANOTHER FUCKING CAGE the moment she loses her shit! I mean, what?! Where did the first guy go???

No. Just no. I realize that this book was written by two authors – and in this moment, it shows. It really doesn’t even feel like the same character, nor does he regain any of the aforementioned characteristics as the book progresses. It’s annoying, and it makes the other three alphas that venture onto the scene that much more appealing, to both the FMC AND the reader.

Fast Burn – HOT

Pros:

  • Interesting Plot.
  • Inclusion of expected human emotions with multiple pairings was a welcome addition.
  • Shira, female character that isn’t horrible or catty to the FMC, again a switch up within genre.

Cons:

  • Much too fast.
  • Some editing issues.
  • Would like more character building.

Verdict

Despite my issues with this novel, it still has some strong selling points and would be worth looking at.
