Down and Dirty

This is a fantastic series – Read it!

What is it about?

17 year old Callie Santiago has known only pain in her short life. Abused and literally tortured by a father who tried to break her, she is now free of his shadow and living with her Aunt Mildred. Taken from her home in Phoenix, Callie now resides in a small, all American town in Oregon where she is supposed to start over in a new school, with new people and an aunt she didn’t even know existed a month ago. Yet anything is better than the hell she survived, and when Felix the Friendly Ghost pops into her new bedroom, Callie finds herself falling headfirst into a new world of paranormal revelation…. and danger.

Thoughts

I adored this book, from start to finish. Callie is literally a survivor, forged in the fires of her past and molded into a fighter for the future. When she meets the guys who will soon become her support system and new family, the revelations thrown at her are met with aplomb – and no small amount of internal quaking. She is strong, yes, but Callie is also damaged, and those fissures in her shell break open in startling ways – allowing us to glimpse the soul behind the facade she shows the world.

All the guys are amazing and pivotal to this story. Connor is a werewolf with a past of his own and a protective drive towards Callie he doesn’t understand. Donovan is a Dark Nephilim cursed to hunt demons, while Kaleb is his opposite, A Light Nephilim meant to help souls to the other side. Nolan is his own brand of danger, a seductive living Vampire with shadowy secrets few know. Then there is Felix – a recently deceased Ghost who haunts Callie’s new home and new friends, flitting to and fro in a nerdy glory that oozes through the pages. (Can you tell I love him?!)

Their presence and support literally make this new world Callie finds herself in palatable, and slowly starts bringing her out of the shell her heart has become. They matter, and they will matter even more when Callie’s truth is exposed and the danger explodes.

I felt echoes of The Veil Diaries here, but in a very good way. That said, it stands on its own – and stands apart by being a completely unique, supernatural tale.

Perspective:

First Person, Multiple POV

Ending Type:

Episodic with Cliffhanger

Pros:

  • Very well written.
  • Callie lives and breathes – along with the guys that surround her.
  • Character development.
  • Aunt Mildred… that woman is awesome.
  • Cover is gorgeous!

Cons:

  • Lack of friendly female characters.
  • Slightly formulaic, but still amazing.

Favorite Lines:

Callie opens the door and pads in with bare feet, thankfully interrupting my downward spiral into self-pity. Had that party a while ago, and it sucked. No one came, and I couldn’t eat the cake. (6% – Felix POV)

Verdict

4.5 out of 5 Stars

Great start to a new series – Fans of The Veil Diaries will LOVE this book. I read it first on Kindle Unlimited then went back and bought it. =)
