Down and Dirty
This is a decent read and a good start to a new series. Recommend.
What is it about?
Kayla just wanted to get back at her harassing boss and possibly enjoy her office job in peace – instead, she is now the prime suspect in his murder! With no evidence, mind you. Well, so he was killed by a witch… and Kayla is a witch. And she might have summoned a demon to deal with it, but she ordered the demon not to kill him, just get rid of him. it’s not really that bad, right? Even if it looks really, really bad….
But Kayla didn’t kill her obnoxious boss. Honest. Now she just has to prove it, while somehow dodging the determined black witch detective, staving off the demon, soothing her werewolf shifter ex and avoiding a flirty Fae Prince! Easy Peasy…. oh, and there is that bad luck curse thing to worry about too….
Thoughts
Can a story about murder, demons, witches, shifters and fae be called cute? Well, if so, then this book qualifies. There’s something almost effervescent in its appeal, or perhaps it’s her innate clumsiness and poor decision making skills? Either way, it’s charming.
As the pages progress, you can feel the plot tighten down, drawer ever nearer to the pseudo conclusion at the climax – before spilling out into the greater universe for a sequal. There is more to this little witch than it first appears, and the souls drawn into her sphere have little choice but to go along for the ride.
Perspective:
First Person, Single POV
Ending Type:
Cliffhanger
Pros:
- A Feel good story, oddly enough.
- Can’t peg a love interest just yet as there are a few roaming. Perhaps an RH? 😉 (Update after reading book 2…. yeah, almost positively a RH)
- Flows well.
- Relatable witch.
- Last bit clears up the character questions I had… almost.
Cons:
- Need more info on that necklace!
- For someone cursed with bad luck, she didn’t come across that unlucky.
Verdict

Great start to a promising new series, it would be a fun addition to your Kindle or paperback collection.
